Telephone code and SIM card
Students usually purchase a mobile phone for incoming and outgoing phone calls, thus avoiding reliance on public telephones and the telephones available in Masaryk University’s residences. There are three mobile phone operators in the Czech Republic – T-Mobile (www.t-mobile.cz), Vodafone (www.vodafone.cz) and O2 (www.cz.o2.com). North American students should ask for a tri-band phone if they want to use the phone after they return home.
To make an international call, dial 00 followed by the country code. A full list of country codes can be found in the Yellow Pages. Within the Czech Republic the nine-digit numbers can be dialled direct. When calling to the Czech Republic from abroad, the country code is 00420 (or +420). For information on telephone numbers in the Czech Republic dial 1180, for information on telephone numbers outside the Czech Republic 1181.
Students can get a free SIM card (with a credit), together with a membership card of the ESN (International Student Club at Masaryk University).
