With your health insurance (see the Health insurance section) you are entitled to visit any general practitioner, specialized doctor or dentist.
Unless it is urgent, we recommend making an appointment in advance on the phone. Don't forget to take the insurance card, number or any document proving your insurance.
If your doctor’s visit makes you miss some classes, or if the doctor tells you to be on bed rest for some time, don’t forget to take a doctor’s note stating the period of your absence and send it to your coordinator. They will then insert it in the IS and your absences will be excused. The rules at the Faculty of Medicine slightly differ, so please contact your coordinator at the Faculty of Medicine as well.
Before going to a doctor in non-emergency situations, you should consider getting a Czech insurance number.

Emergency Hospital for children
In the case of children and young people (up to the age of 18) that are in need of urgent care, you should turn to the Children’s Hospital at Černopolní 9 - 1st floor of pavilion G – ambulatory area.
Urgent care services are available from 15:30 to 7:00 on weekdays and round the clock on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The contact number is +420 532 234 935 and it is available from 15:30.
When you arrive at the hospital, first you have to register the child at the Central Registration Office (Hall D). You will then be given instructions on what to do next.
In case of burns, you have to turn to the Children's Burns Center located in the Bohunice Hospital, Jihlavská 20.
Most of the medicines available elsewhere can be obtained here, though not necessarily in every pharmacy. In case you need some kind of medicine in the evening, at night or over the weekend when shops are normally closed, there is one non-stop pharmacy located conveniently close to the Main railway station at Bašty 2.
Make sure you have taken enough medicine with you to cover the whole stay in the Czech Republic. If you need a new prescription in the Czech Republic, use a prescription abroad within EU.
- Bašty 413/2, 602 00 Brno, Tel: +420 542 213 531, Opening hours: Mon–Sun: nonstop
Doctors (speaking English)
Do not forget to take the insurance card, number or any other proof of your insurance. If the doctor doesn’t accept your insurance card and asks you to pay on spot, do not forget to get a receipt/payment confirmation. You will need this document for your home insurance company, which will give you the refund.
If you have any prescription medications, you can pick them up at any pharmacy in Czech Republic with the prescription from your doctor. This however doesn’t apply to e-prescription issued outside of the Czech Republic.
If you are from an EU country, see the tab Insurance Registration on the right.
Students from non-EU countries or EU students without the Czech insurance number have to pay on the spot. The doctors mostly only accept cash and the price does not usually exceed 100-200 CZK.
If you need an emergency dentist treatment, expect to pay an amount exceeding 1000 CZK even if you do have a Czech insurance number.
Please note that the nurses may not speak English but the doctors do.

If you are an EU citizen, you should register your EHIC card with a Czech insurance company VZP right upon your arrival. It is free and it will give you a Czech insurance number that you can use anytime you need to see a medical facility in the Czech Republic. The Czech insurance number gives you same coverage of medical care as Czech citizens have, and also the same extent of possible free Covid-19 testing. It can also reduce the cost of co-pays for prescription medicine. You get the insurance number by going to a VZP office at Benešova 10, Brno and presenting your EHIC and ID card.
Some non-EU citizens are also eligible for this – see this webpage.
We strongly recommend you to get the Czech insurance number at the beginning of your stay. Please be aware that despite having the Czech insurance number, you may be asked to cover some medical fees at the doctor. You can also purchase private or travel insurance to cover the remaining costs of medical care.
