A visit to any health service in the Czech Republic will require health insurance. We strongly recommend that you take your insurance card with you. Based on the features of your insurance plan, you may get the needed service for free or for a fee that you may request back from your insurance company (always inquire with your insurance company about how to proceed or which medical service to visit).
Unless it is urgent, we recommend making an appointment in advance by phone or email, if applicable. Don't forget to take your insurance card, number, or any other document proving your insurance.
Before seeing a doctor in non-emergency situations, you should consider getting a Czech insurance number (apply mainly to EU citizens or other countries on a special list – see tab Registration with Czech General Health insurance company).
If you need to see a doctor other than a general practitioner (a specialist of different kinds), you should first see your general practitioner (for students - preferably the university’s DP, Dr. Kateřina Kolářová, for university employees – find your GP and register – see the list of English speaking doctors) who will give you a referral to the given specialist. The following specializations are available without referral from GP: dermatology, ophthalmology, and otorhinolaryngology.

Doctors (speaking English)
Do not forget to take the insurance card, number or any other proof of your insurance. If the doctor doesn’t accept your insurance card and asks you to pay on spot, do not forget to get a receipt/payment confirmation. You will need this document for your home insurance company, which will give you the refund.
NB for students: If you have any prescription medications, you can pick them up at any pharmacy in Czech Republic with the prescription from your doctor. This however doesn’t apply to e-prescription issued outside of the Czech Republic.
If you are from an EU country, see the tab Registration with insurance company.
Citizens of non-EU countries or EU citizens without the Czech insurance number have to pay on the spot. The doctors mostly only accept cash and the price does not usually exceed 100-200 CZK.
If you need an emergency dentist treatment, expect to pay an amount exceeding 1000 CZK even if you do have a Czech insurance number.
Please note that the nurses may not speak English but the doctors do. When the practitioners have information on their website that they do not accept new patients, it usually means that they will still take you in for a one-time exam, and you can still contact them. The doctors listed are only taking walk-ins and calls during the hours listed below.

Thu: 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Note: If you are a foreign student and have commercial insurance for foreigners from PZVP (insurance no. 333), you can use the services of the ambulance usually for free. If you have any other commercial insurance, you should expect to pay in cash (no credit/bank card accepted there). You will get a receipt for the examination and you can then claim the amount from your health insurance company (this is the case with many European health insurance companies).
