Participation Conditions
- The study placement at MU partner universities is intended for students who have completed at least two semesters at the time of their departure abroad.
- The standard length of a study placement is one semester.
- The student is obliged to obtain 20 ECTS per semester of study at the host institution or the equivalent in the credit system of the foreign university.
- In general, the programme is open to students at all levels of study, although some schools allow only certain levels. For more detailed information, please see the description of the partner school on this website.
- The student participating in the mobility must be an active MU student for the entire duration of the mobility, either in full-time or combined studies.
- The host school may have additional requirements for selected students.
- Repeated study visits to partner universities are possible, but not to the same university.
- The programme requires the MU student to submit an application for recognition of courses/credits from the foreign placement at the end of the placement. More information can be found here.
Financial Conditions
- In most cases, Masaryk University provides students with a scholarship of up to 20,000 CZK for one month of study, or 700 EUR (depending on the form of cooperation with the university)
- The physical presence of the student at the foreign university is a prerequisite. However, the payment of the scholarship is conditional on the approval of the budget for the calendar year, so CZS cannot confirm the scholarship until the last minute. In case of a stay in the spring semester, CZS is usually able to pay the scholarship in February, so the student should be financially prepared for this possible delay.
- In some cases, foreign universities also provide financial grants. In such situations, the Masaryk University scholarship is reduced or cancelled completely (see information on individual universities).
- The scholarship is awarded on the basis of an electronic application submitted in the IS MU and after the study agreement has been duly approved by all parties (LA document) in the IS OIS.
- The scholarship is NOT available for online tuition at a foreign university.
List of Universities
(Important: The list of universities that it is currently possible to apply to can be found in the section Current Invitations)
Application
The application can only be submitted electronically.
The application form consists of the following documents:
- Application form: see online application form
- Cover letter in English (if studying in English) or in English and Spanish (if studying in Spanish). In case of study in another language, the cover letter must be in English.
- Please provide a separate letter for each university to which you are applying.
- Your motivation letter should not only introduce yourself but also present the reasons that lead you to be interested in studying at the university. The letter should also present your academic goals, whether academic (e.g. information about the courses you would like to take at the university) or research (e.g. how you will use the placement to write your thesis).
- A letter of recommendation issued by a teacher in the field must be delivered in a sealed envelope signed by the teacher on a label, on the form provided (form Academic Reference Form can be found in the Documents section). The letter of recommendation may also be sent by the MU instructor via e-mail from his/her IS e-mail account by the CZS application deadline, on the given scanned form, including signatures. The letter of recommendation can be delivered in English.
- A transcript of grades for studies at MU in English (each student can generate it himself in the IS MU in the E-Transcripts application) or a diploma supplement for already completed degrees at MU or outside MU. If the student is in the first year and has not taken any exams at the time of application, he/she uploads an E-Transcript of enrolled courses or a blank document.
- Proof of proficiency in the language to be taught – in the case of English, see the notice below, for other languages this can be done individually (certificate is an advantage, but not a requirement).
- If the applicant does not have a language certificate such as TOEFL, IELTS, CAE or FCE (at B2 level) or does not study English (Faculty of Arts or Faculty of Education), it is necessary to take an English language test organized by the Centre for International Cooperation in cooperation with the Centre for Language Education.
- The level of the test corresponds to the European classification level B2. Listening comprehension, lexical and grammatical knowledge and reading comprehension are tested. The total test time is 60 minutes.
- The test serves primarily for the purposes of the CZS selection procedure, it does not result in a certificate, it does not replace any requirements of partner schools for a specific language certificate
- Students who have taken this test in the past and are interested in repeating it must seek approval from the CZS Coordinator.
- If a student passes the test in the last round of the selection process, he/she can use it in the next round.
- Further information about the CZS language test, including dates and a link to the application form, can be found here.
- Please note: In some cases, nominated students without a certificate will still have to take the TOEFL or IELTS exam after successfully completing the CZS selection process (see individual university admissions policies).
You can apply to up to three universities, which you rank according to your priorities.
The selection procedure may also include oral interviews, which may take place three to four weeks after the closing date for applications.
The criteria for selecting students can be found in the Documents section.
Before Departure
- The student is obliged to conclude a Learning Agreement. It is filled in ONLINE in IS OIS, see the Instructions for filling in the Learning Agreement online (you can find it in the Documents section).
- The student consults the study contract with the person in charge of the MU department/faculty of the field of study through which he/she is travelling. The authorized person proposes the method of recognition of studies and confirms by his/her electronic signature that the courses taken abroad will be recognized upon the student's return.
- The study contract is then confirmed with an electronic signature by the CZS coordinator and then the document is automatically sent to the foreign institution for confirmation.
- MU accepts only an electronic study contract completed in the IS OIS.
- Students must complete at least 20 ECTS credits per semester abroad.
- The student records the study placement in the MU IS (Personal Administration – Personal Data section) and uploads the signed study contract (at least by an authorised MU person) to the MU IS system.
- Students must arrange their visas, flights, accommodation and other requirements in cooperation with the CZS and the coordinator of the host university.
- When purchasing tickets, we recommend arranging trip cancellation insurance.
- Students can apply for a scholarship to support their study abroad. To do so, they need to submit an Application for Study Abroad Scholarship electronically in the IS MU (the link is sent by the CZS coordinator via e-mail). The scholarship is usually paid before the start of the placement or in the first part of the semester (if it is the spring semester). The application should be submitted with the exact expected start and end dates of the study, not the placement, no earlier than one month before the planned start.
- The scholarship is paid to the Czech crowns account listed in the IS MU in one instalment if it falls within one calendar year. In the event of a top-up in a new calendar year, the second instalment is sent automatically without the need to apply for it. For more detailed information, see the Financial Conditions section. In selected cases, it may be paid in EUR.
While Abroad
- The student has the right to make changes to the study contract, but these must be made no later than 4 weeks after the start of the semester at the foreign institution.
- All changes to the study contract must be agreed electronically by both the sending and receiving institutions.
- Changes to the Learning Agreement are completed by the student online in IS OIS according to the Instructions for completing the Learning Agreement and its changes (see the Documents section).
- The student will have the Confirmation of Studies document, i.e. Confirmation of the actual duration of the study placement (available for download directly in the application form in IS OIS), and will also arrange for the issue of a statement of grades or other documents required for the recognition of credits/courses completed.
After Return
- The student uploads the Confirmation of Studies to the application form in the IS OIS within 10 days of the end of the study placement.
- The student uploads a Transcript of Records (Transcript of Credits, minimum 20 ECTS) to the application form in the IS OIS – we recommend finding out in advance how the document will be distributed (often it is issued after the student's departure), preferably within 5 weeks of the end of the study placement.
- The student will report the placement, preferably within 30 days of the end of the placement. The report is completed online in the IS OIS (select Final Reports in the Open Programs Overview section).
- Students must apply for recognition of courses/credits from their study abroad after completing their studies abroad. Recognition of courses/credits is the full responsibility of individual faculties/departments/institutes and the MU person in charge. More information is available here.
FAQ
I am applying in my first semester of study and have no completed courses, what should I upload to my application in ISOIS?
Upload either a list of enrolled courses, which can be downloaded from the E-Lists in IS, or a blank document to the application form in ISOIS. If you are applying in the first semester of a continuing Master's degree, you may upload the Diploma Supplement from a previous degree.
Recommendation Letter must be from a professor at Academic Level or can it be someone else?
The person writing the letter must have the status of a teacher at Masaryk University. In this matter, we also recommend that the person be a teacher of vocational subjects, not language subjects, although even a language teacher formally meets this requirement. One of the main purposes of the recommendation is to give an expert opinion on the relevance of the foreign study to the student's study programme at MU - this task is primarily handled by the teacher of the programme.
Is it possible to complete the application without a letter of recommendation from a professor?
It is possible, you just have to write to the program coordinator that the teacher's recommendation will come later.
How is it possible to make multiple applications to multiple universities?
You can only apply to one university, but you can apply to up to three universities within that application. However, you will need to submit a separate cover letter for each of them.
The university requires a GPA, how do I calculate it?
You can calculate your GPA using various web calculators (for example, here).
Do I have to pay tuition fees at the partner university?
No, the programme exempts students from paying tuition fees at a foreign university.
What is the Incoming Student Allowance?
In some cases (always specified in the profile of the specific university), students return a portion of the scholarship, which is calculated individually for each academic year, as a contribution for a student coming to MU from a partner university. In exchange, the student's accommodation and meals abroad are covered.
Is it sufficient to deliver the report after the end of the placement?
Yes, please deliver the report again after you have fully completed your studies.
Is a Learning Agreement confirmation from the Muni coordinator required for the second semester in advance of the second semester (it is turned in twice)? If so, when should I send it in? Or is it sufficient to submit the Learning Agreement by the end of the first month of the spring semester?
It is up to you, it will be enough for us if you deliver a copy of it in its final form (i.e. after all changes) within 30 days from the start of the semester.
Do the credits I earned by studying at MU count towards the mandatory minimum credits?
No, the 20 ECTS credits earned while abroad do not include credits earned while at MU.
